Chooch’s Story: Finding Belonging Through Heartstrings

Image

Chooch was born with neurodevelopmental conditions including a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, a condition that has really impacted and limited him for much of his life. Even though he has always been determined to do things on his own, doctors and therapists warned that his condition is progressive and will be a lifelong challenge. He might never live on his own, cook for himself, or hold a job.

Because of his special needs, it has been difficult to find programs that could accommodate him. This prevented Chooch from doing many of the things that most kids get to experience, such as building independence, forming strong peer relationships, and imagining a future filled with possibility. But all of that changed when our Heartstrings program gave him a chance.

Through Heartstrings, Chooch found not just a program, but a place where he truly belongs. He is now a barista at our CHA coffee shop, Germain Grounds in our Heartstrings building. Our Barista Program employs teens and young adults while providing comprehensive training, interview support, and hands-on, on-the-job skills. Just as importantly, it builds confidence, independence, and pro-social abilities that carry far beyond the coffee counter.

Chooch has never felt so accepted, welcomed, and loved as he has at Heartstrings. He has made so many new friends and is well known throughout our community. Each shift at Germain Grounds is another step forward and proof of what is possible when individuals are met with opportunity instead of limitation.

Chooch is now able to do things we never thought were possible. Our outlook on his future and what he is capable of has completely changed. He realizes that his disabilities do not confine him. The sky is the limit for Chooch!
