Samuel’s Story: How One Foster Family Changed a 3-Year-Old’s Life

When Samuel entered foster care, his world felt distant and unfamiliar. Samuel spent a long time without consistent care or attention, so he learned to exist quietly. He rarely spoke and struggled to hold eye contact with others, often seeming disconnected from what was happening around him. It was as if he had learned that staying in his own small world was the safest way to cope.

Samuel was not used to being comforted by adults. When he became upset, he pulled away rather than reaching for reassurance. Simple experiences that many children enjoy felt overwhelming to him. Going to new places was frightening, and during community outings he would often try to run away since he was unsure on how to navigate unfamiliar surroundings. Mealtimes were also difficult, as Samuel would eat past the point of comfort, sometimes becoming sick. Each behavior reflected how much instability and unmet needs had shaped his early life.

Everything began to shift when Samuel was welcomed into the home of one of our loving CHA therapeutic foster families. From the very beginning, his foster parents understood that Samuel needed time, patience, and gentleness more than anything else. They focused on helping him feel safe by offering calm reassurance and consistent routines without pressure or expectations.

Slowly, Samuel began to respond. As days turned into weeks, he started paying more attention to the people around him. He became curious about his foster parents’ biological daughters and actually began playing with them. These moments were small victories, and they marked important steps toward his new connection with others.

Samuel’s foster parents recognized his need for extra support, so they enrolled him in speech therapy. His communication skills began to grow with steady care. Words came gradually, followed by gestures, expressions, and a growing confidence in being heard. As his ability to express himself improved, so did his sense of belonging.

As Samuel grew more comfortable in his foster home, he started discovering joy in everyday routines. He now loves listening to stories and looks forward to being tucked in at night. He enjoys playing outside, jumping on the trampoline, and spending time at the park. These experiences that were once overwhelming have become sources of happiness and laughter for Samuel.

Today, Samuel is a happy, smiling three-year-old. His foster parents have been deeply grateful to witness his progress and to be part of his healing journey. They have also extended compassion and support to Samuel’s biological mother, who is working diligently toward reunification. We are proud of how far Samuel has come and can’t wait to see how his future unfolds!
