A Compassionate Commitment to Our Youth
In a heartfelt proclamation, Governor Roy Cooper has officially designated May as Foster Care Month in North Carolina. This declaration recognizes the critical role that foster families, kinship caregivers, child welfare professionals, and advocates play in ensuring the safety, permanence, and well-being of children in foster care.
The Precious Resource of Our Youth
The proclamation begins by acknowledging that the youth of North Carolina are our most precious resource and the hope for our future. Every child deserves a safe, loving, and nurturing place to call home. Unfortunately, there are approximately 10,042 children and youth in the foster care system in North Carolina, along with approximately 841 young adults aged 18 to 20 in extended foster care.
The Purpose of Foster Care
Foster care serves as a temporary refuge for children who are facing crisis situations. It provides safe, secure, and stable homes through the compassion and nurturing of foster families or kinship families. These families open their hearts and homes to children, helping them heal, reunify, and transition successfully into adulthood.
Acknowledging the Heroes
During Foster Care Month, we recognize and honor the heroes who make a difference in the lives of these children:
- Foster Families and Kinship Families: These compassionate individuals step up when families are in crisis, providing stability and love to children during challenging times.
- Child Welfare Professionals: Social workers, counselors, and other professionals work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of children in foster care.
- Advocates: Organizations and individuals raise awareness about the needs of children in foster care and advocate for their rights.
Taking Action
Governor Cooper encourages all North Carolinians to think about how they can contribute to meeting the need for more foster, kinship, and adoptive families. Whether through volunteering, supporting foster families, or advocating for policy changes, everyone can play a role in improving the lives of these vulnerable children.

As we observe Foster Care Month, let us celebrate the resilience of children in foster care and express our gratitude to those who dedicate their time, energy, and talents to their well-being. Together, we can create a brighter future for North Carolina’s youth.
