Statesville, NC – Iredell County Parks and Recreation Department announces the plan to purchase facilities and adjoining land located in Barium Springs.

Iredell County and Children’s Hope Alliance are excited to announce a long-term partnership that begins with the purchase of the Barium Springs Family YMCA and other properties on Grannis Lane. The purchase of this property by Iredell County will allow the relocation of the Iredell County Parks and Recreation Department’s administrative offices at a lower cost than anticipated, while securing the long-term public use for the pool and fitness center.

The building was originally built in 1952 and officially dedicated on February 17, 1953.  It was originally named for a former superintendent of Barium Springs Home for Children, Dr. Joseph B. Johnston.  It served as a home for athletics and other activities for the kids who lived on campus at the time.  Improvements were made throughout the years.

In 2000 Children’s Hope Alliance began a long-term lease with the YMCA, which ends in December of 2018. When it became apparent that a new agreement or sale would not be reached with the YMCA, Children’s Hope Alliance approached Iredell County about purchasing the property in June 2018. After great deliberation, Iredell County placed an offer on the property that was accepted by Children’s Hope Alliance. Along with the fitness center and pool, the purchase includes 27 acres that adjoin the Iredell County Fair Grounds.

Michelle Hepler, (Iredell County Parks & Recreation Director, stated) “Iredell County Parks and Recreation is very excited about the opportunity to bring a presence to the citizens of Troutman with the relocation of our administrative offices and the addition of programmable space that can act as a community hub for all citizens. It is our intention to work with the YMCA to provide a seamless transition for the membership and facility users.”

Celeste Dominguez, (President & CEO of Children’s Hope Alliance) “Children’s Hope Alliance appreciates the long-term relationship with the YMCA, and we are equally excited about strengthening our partnership with the county, and providing increased services to Barium Springs, Troutman, and the surrounding communities.”
