Distancing & Connection
“Social distancing” has become such a normal phrase in our collective vocabulary that it fails to raise any eyebrows at just how strange this word combination is. It seems more like a contradiction, really.
Others have written that what we should really be saying is “physical distancing” instead of “social distancing” and I agree. Just that turn of phrase allows us to view the distance in a different manner – it allows us, while physically apart, to be social, to connect, and to support one another.
It’s from that viewpoint that I’d like us to move forward as an agency. At this time of being physically distant, I encourage each of us to be socially close, especially now, as the weeks wear on and people are feeling more isolated than ever before – that includes our fellow staff members, our clients, their families, and people in our own communities.
We have a responsibility, as a member of the human race, to help one another on our daily journeys. So during today’s journey, I challenge you to draw socially close to as many people as you can.
